EXO’s Chanyeol’s Enlistment
Chanyeol enlisted in mandatory military service on March 29th, 2021. He is the fifth EXO member to serve after Xiumin, D.O., Suho, and Chen. Chanyeol must undergo basic military training for four weeks before being assigned to a unit as active military personnel. There was no information about the time and place of enlistment but it is estimated that he will be discharged on September 28th, 2022. Before enlistment, Chanyeol uploaded a picture of himself while wearing D.O‘s watch. In the caption, Chanyeol wrote: “Farewell” and hashtagged it “D.O.’s watch”. EXO Members’ Reactions
The remaining EXO members are very excited about Chanyeol’s enlistment. They uploaded several group pictures on the LYSN app prior to enlistment. Sehun, Kai, and Baekhyun placed their hands on Chanyeol’s head while looking at the camera. D.O. and Xiumin who have already finished military service looked more astonished with Chanyeol’s head.
EXO’s Enlistment Tradition
EXO members gathered for taking several pictures with Chanyeol prior to enlistment. Sehun, Kai, D.O. Xiumin, and Baekhyun sat around Chanyeol and held his shaved head. The tradition was started by Xiumin, the oldest member and the first member to enter military service. Fans noticed something special in Chanyeol’s enlistment pictures. They made an agreement to wear similar clothes prior to taking the pictures. EXO members wore military-themed clothing, a grey shirt, and green pants. Prior to Chanyeol’s enlistment, EXO members wore casual clothes when taking the photos. Perhaps, they wanted to start a new tradition or they just wanted something different than the earlier pictures. It was later revealed that they just finished making a music video for the upcoming comeback project. It was a military-themed music video hence they were wearing military-themed outfits.

Most of the fans reacted positively to the enlistment news. On his Instagram account, more than 3 million fans loved his enlistment picture and more than three hundred comments were posted. They will miss him very much; fans will especially miss his smile and his grin. The announcement of Chanyeol’s enlistment coincided with EXO’s 9th Anniversary.
