Cha Soo-yeon in For Eternal Hearts

Cha Soo-yeon made her debut as an actress appearing in the movie For Eternal Hearts (2007) playing Suji. For Eternal Hearts (Hangul: 별빛 속 으로) is a movie directed by Hwang Qu-duk with a storyline about voodoo and mystery. The storyline of this movie tells of a professor named Su-yeong (played by Jeong Jin-yeong) who is one day asked by his students to tell them the story about his first love. The story of the professional has several oddities. At a young age, Su-yeong (played by Jung Kyung-ho) had met Pippi (played by Kim Gyu-ri) who was a student and met him when she was a child. Pippi is a name specially given by Su-yeong and he never reveals her real name or identity, but gradually she tries to get along with Su-yeong. Feeling neglected, Pippi commits suicide in front of all the students. Since that tragic incident, everyone has experienced strange things. Su-yeong still sees Pippi even though he knows the real Pippi is dead. And strangely, Pippi even helps Su-yeong to get a job as a tutor. Once upon a time, Su-yeong met a student who would be taught named Suji (played by Cha Soo-yeon). The girl is really quiet and lives in a big house that is quite creepy, but there is something strange with Suji, especially considering the ghost of Pippi who brought him to meet Suji. Time flies after Su-yeong and Suji meet, it seems that Suji has special feelings for Su-yeong secretly. However, slowly but surely, Suji finds out that Pippi is always following Su-yeong.

Cha Soo-yeon in Beautiful

Beautiful (Hangul: 아름답다) is a movie written and produced by Kim Ki-duk who is famous for his works full of cinematic scenes and many explorations of the value of life. This movie is also directed by Juhn Jai-hon who made his debut in this film. This film tells the story of Eun-young (played by Cha Soo-yeon) a beautiful young woman whose beauty brings nothing but trouble, usually the target of unwanted male attention and bad people. After one of her many stalkers named Seong-min (played by Kim Min-soo) followed her to her house and committed brutal sexual assault, the man was finally caught by the police and told that it was actually Eun-young’s beauty that made him want to rape that woman. The poor woman’s mind begins to deteriorate and she blames her appearance for the ordeal, deciding to try to make herself fat first, then thin. Meanwhile, she is watched over by police officer Eun-cheol (played by Lee Chun-hee) whose concern and desire to save her from herself slowly turn into a sexual obsession. Beautiful is not a movie that has a cheerful genre and reminds us that bad people are around our lives. The storyline also tells of social criticism which reverses social obsession with physical appearance and takes an approach to gender differences. The last one is misogynistic how a man playing with a woman with most men trying cruelly to possess Eun-young or even in the case of a police officer who said that she was to blame for getting herself raped. Unsurprisingly, her trials are often difficult to watch, becoming increasingly uncomfortable from the initial scene of Eun-young surrounded by a mob of rotten admirers, to her gruesome experiences at the hands of creepy rapists, and finally to a mental breakdown and Eun-young’s desperate attempts to transform her body. The film is sexually graphic although it features some bloody violent scenes due to its tragic ending. In Beautiful, Cha Soo-yeon really plays the character Eun-young well as the female protagonist who is brave but always ends up in torment. The emotional depth of the shown acting skills also hypnotized the audience and no doubt deserves an award for the many vomiting scenes she had to do. Juhn Jai-hong also deserves appreciation because he is a behind-the-scenes figure who is able to encourage viewers to sympathize with Eun-young by presenting her as a vulnerable woman who desperately needs help and she engages viewers in her suffering.
