 Girls’ Generation – TTS

TTS, or TaeTiSeo, is the first sub-group of the Korean idol group Girls Generation. The name TTS came from the first syllable of its members’ names, Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun. SM Entertainment announced the side project on April 19th, 2012. The formation was intended to seek attention from K-pop fans with its musicality, stage performance, and fantasy outfits. On their debut day, promotional photos of the three members in eye-catching outfits and makeup were released. Their outfits seemed to be inspired by the characters and costumes of the novel and movie Charlie and The Chocolate Factory; they were vivid, colorful, and fancy. All the members were dressed with black shorts and shoulder-less tops. The base was simple, but the accessories were outrageous and oversized, with contrasting color. On the same day, several teasers from their debut single Twinkle were released and became trending videos on YouTube. In just four days, all the views from the teasers had reached more than 10 millions views.

1st EP, Twinkle

TaeTiSeo’s debut mini album, Twinkle, was released on April 29th, 2012. Their debut stage performance was held on Mnet’s M! Countdown on May 3rd, 2012. Twinkle set a record, peaking at number 126 on Billboard Top 200 chart, and selling over 3000 copies at the time. The single was well-accepted globally, reaching the highest position on the Billboard World Album chart and  the second position on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums. Domestically, Twinkle was highly popular, reaching the top position on the Gaon Digital Chart. In July 2014, it had been sold and downloaded more than 2.5 million times in Korea. In the iTunes Album charts, Twinkle peaked at number one in Japan and Bulgaria, while reaching the top ten in various other countries. For global TTS fans, a special photo album was included on iTunes at the time of the release. Global and well-acclaimed American producers collaborated in writing and producing Twinkle.  The album was published under Jam Factory, who have sourced music tunes and lyrics for Asian artists from US-based songwriters and musician. Music Video

The long-awaited Twinkle music video was released on April 30, 2012. As of January 2020, it records more than 80 million views, the highest number of views from an idol group’s sub-unit. Some of EXO K’s members, Park Chan-yeol, Baekhyun, Sehun, and Kai, appeared on the music video. The concept for Twinkle seemed to be inspired by the popular Broadway musical. Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun dressed like the goddesses from musical theater. As the trio got out of a car, groups of paparazzi took their pictures. Paparazzi took pictures of their every move. Inside a changing room, the girls were dressed in lavish outfits and wore expensive jewelry. Staff and assistants pampered them with beautiful makeup, hair treatments, and twinkling clothes and shining shoes. At the end, Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun took the center stage and performed a musical. Visually, the music video showed and illustrated the Twinkle theme very well. TaeTiSeo performed at the 2012 Love Korea Dream Concert. The concert was held on May 12th, 2012, at Sangamdong World Cup Stadium. The girls stunned the crowd with their sexy performance. Twinkle

Twinkle was about a confident girl who knows her own value. Even when she covers herself with a veil, her charm and beauty radiate through the veil and twinkle like a star. The girl falls in love with a man wholeheartedly, and wants to look at her best whenever she’s close to him. Nevertheless, the man she falls in love with ignores and is indifferent towards the girl.

Baby Steps

TaeTiSeo’s Baby Steps tells about a girl that has a crush on a man. Being a woman, she doesn’t let her pride make her stop chasing him. She can’t hide her feelings, but she is always cautious in front of him. She gathers her courage and starts approaching him because her crush might leave her if she doesn’t do anything. With her trembling steps, she approaches her crush little by little.

OMG (Oh My Good)

OMG told a story about a young girl with her crush. In her eyes, he is perfect. All the girls around town adore him, but he refuses to enjoy his popularity. Instead, he prefers to live like an artist and live on his own. The girl worships him and thinks of him as perfect. Even a precious stone or expensive clothes look shabby when compared to this perfect crush.

Library

A boyfriend is like a library to a girl. Though she knew him for a long time, she always finds new things about him. She wants to know everything about him and she waits patiently until he opens up and is fully himself. In front of him, she feels like being in a library with many books to read.

Good-bye, Hello (안녕)

Good-bye, Hello told a story about a recent breakup between two lovers. After her recent break up, the girl is having trouble forgetting her former sweetheart. She contemplates things and recollects their wonderful moments together. She can’t believe that her boyfriend said good-bye after all of his promises.

Love Sick (처음이었죠)

A girl is left helpless and desperate because a man had just stolen her heart. It is the first time she fell in love and she was defenseless to his charm. She lacks the courage to look at him and run away whenever he is around. She prays every single day for him to look at her and see her as a woman.

Checkmate (체크메이트)

It is a recurring problem. He continues to make the same mistake, and gets away with all his excuses. This time his time is up. There is no escape route, no excuse, and no explanation. It is checkmate. She waited patiently for her boyfriend to fall into a trap, and be done with him once and for all. No more sadness and tears. It is the end, checkmate! TaeTiSeo is the most successful sub-unit from any idol group. Its songs are popular and become all-time favorites for TTS fans.
