Debut with STELLAR
Hyoeun made her debut with STELLAR in 2012, however, the group itself had debuted a year before she joined them. STELLAR officially debuted on August 28th, 2011, with the unsuccessful single “Rocket Girl” and this group under The Entertainment Pascal debuted with a cute-pretty concept. Then, on January 26th, 2012, Hyoeun replaced JoA and Lee-seul alongside Min-hee in 2012 on their first comeback “UFO.” Sadly, from their initial debut, until their next comeback, they hadn’t been able to successfully climb the charts with their music. However, in July 2013, they released their 3rd digital single “Study,” and finally they were able to get into the top 100 for the first time.
From Cute to Controversial Sexy Concept
As we all know, STELLAR debuted with a cute concept, but they totally changed from cute to sexy-semi-edgy on February 12th, 2014. At that time, they released their first extended play (EP) Marionette. Their management changed their concept to get more attention from the public and to make this group more known. They released the music video for “Marionette” which apparently shocked everyone and they faced a lot of criticism. The group received further criticism for their 19+ music video and performance of “Marionette.” The members want to show off their sensual side which is often considered as blasphemy and highly controversial. It is precisely because of this controversy that they got more popular among the public. Despite the controversy, it became their best selling single, peaking at number 35 and 34 on Gaon and Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 charts, respectively. And after that, they made another comeback and released the digital single “Mask” in August 2014. Not only that, STELLAR made another controversy in 2016 when releasing their promotional photos. The photos were made as part of the promotional materials for their album Sting, where they seem to have put a sexy concept which some of the audiences condemned to an extent that they even got mad. The members wore clothes that are usually worn by kids. However their poses were considered too sexy for their age, and they could even be considered as an invitation of bad thoughts in men and pedophiles. For example, Jeonyul, she only wore a white T-shirt and strawberry underwear. And Hyoeun is dressed even worse: she has tiny sweatpants while straddling and their photos are considered the sexiest girl group photos of all time. The members certainly got a lot of criticism due to this concept. What’s more, their photographer Rotta is known as the photographer who promotes the “Lolly” concept and exploits their innocence in a sexual manner. Every year, with every new comeback, they were pushing the limits my coming up with more daring and sexy concepts for their music videos. In 2015, they released their single “Vibrato” and again, they obtained more recognition for the controversial music video, again and again. Responding to negative comments, the members said that they actually danced with sensual movements and sexy clothes just because they wanted to show their identity.
After being together for eight years, establishing a career in the entertainment industry, in 2018 they decided to disband. At first, Minhee opened her voice regarding their disbandment on Instagram. On February 22nd, 2018, the members, together with two former members of the group, Gayoung and Jeonyul, held a fan meeting in Seoul. They couldn’t hold back their tears when they met fans (Twinkles) and revealed the end of the contract with The Entertainment Pascal. And before that, there was a piece of news that stated the members didn’t want to extend their contracts. But after they disbanded, they were many statements from ex-members Gayoung and Minhee about the group and agency. They said the complaints and sadness when they were under the management of the agency. Since long ago, all members had been feeling uncomfortable with the agency, about the sexy concept that is too vulgar and they felt fooled by them. After the bang dissolved, many people speculated that among the reasons they didn’t want to extend their contracts are coercion and insecurity of concepts that are too excessive.
Here are some photos of Hyoeun of photoshoots she has done both with STELLAR and by herself.
