Debut as Stellar Member and Her Career Journey

Stellar was a South Korean girl group whose debut lineup consisted of Gayoung, true rookie Jeonyul and former members of Honeydew Lee-seul and JoA. The group officially debuted on August 28th, 2011, when the digital single Rocket Girl was released.

On January 26th, 2012, Lee-seul and JoA were confirmed to leave the group and be replaced for their first comeback track “UFO” by Min-hee and Hyo-eun.

Stellar released their third digital single Study on July 11th, 2013, and marked their first time in the top 100.

Stellar launched their first extended play Marionette on February 12th, 2014. The group received backlash for their promotional material “stripping game,” which involved fans having to “like” a post on the official Facebook page of Stellar to share pictures of the body parts of the members. The group got more backlash for their 19+ “Marionette” music video and performances. “Marionette” was their best-selling single despite the controversy, peaking at numbers 35 and 34 on the Gaon and Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 chart, respectively.

Stellar released the digital single “Fool” and their music video on March 9th, 2015.

Stellar released the single “Vibrato” and another controversial music video on July 20th, 2015, attracting further recognition. The group responded to criticism of their provocative stage costumes by stating that the sexy music video of “Vibrato” was merely meant to be an example of the unique identity of the group.

The album and the music video for the title track “Sting” were released on January 18th, 2016. The band clarified that their “Sting” intentions were different from “Marionette” and “Vibrato,” saying: “This time, we wanted to look more like a girlfriend rather than to […] look provocative. We put on lighter makeup so that more fans will feel closer to us.”

It was officially announced on July 10th, 2016, that the group would be releasing their seventh single album titled Cry on July 18th, releasing the release date and the first promotional photos for the single via their official Twitter account. This project was also partially funded by a Makestar crowd-funding initiative that raised $53,593 (532 percent of its original goal).

On June 20th, 2017, Pascal Entertainment announced the release of the group’s third mini-album titled Stellar Into the World. On June 27th, the title track “Archangels of the Sephiroth” was released.

After their official disbandment in 2018, Minhee released a video of Stellar’s first group party since disbandment on October 30th, 2018 via her YouTube channel About Mini. The gathering was attended by Gayoung, Minhee, Hyoeun, and Jeonyul. Minhee explained it was thanks to fans that the Reunion Party was organized.

Jeonyul’s Departure From Stellar

Pascal Entertainment announced that Jeonyul and Gayoung will be departed as Stellar members after their contracts expire at the end of August 2017. On Wednesday, August 23rd, 2017, Pascal Entertainment’s representative wrote the announcement on their official Twitter. “Stellar members, Gayoung and Jeonyul decided to graduate from the group when their contracts expired,” the agency wrote. Along with the announcement, the agency also uploaded pictures of handwritten letters from Jeon Yul and Gayoung who wanted to say goodbye to the Twinkles (the Stellar fandom name). Gayoung wrote, “I don’t know how to start. I want to apologize to fans who have been waiting for my first letter and maybe worry about it. As if it was still yesterday when I was 20 years old and joined this company to achieve my dreams. Now, 7 years have already passed, a moment that I never imagined would emerge finally happened. My contract was completed on August 31st. I think it’s better to tell you before the concert is held. That’s why I share this announcement,” she continued. Just like Gayoung, Jeonyul also wrote out a heartfelt letter after no longer being a Stellar member. “I never imagined I’d write a letter like this. My heart hurts when I have to write a letter like this to Twinkle. After thinking long, I decided to start a new journey after the contract with the agency ended on August 31st. I still remember when I first stood as a member of Stellar, on August 25th, 2011. The memory is still fresh in my mind, but time passed by very quickly,” she continued. “I was worried about making this decision. I can shine a lot like now for the love and support of Twinkle. I will never be able to forget Twinkle who made our appearance brighter. I will always remember that moment from my heart,” she wrote again. “Don’t be too disappointed, and keep supporting me until we meet again,” she concluded. Meanwhile, Stellar held a concert celebrating their 6th anniversary with the title Interstellar: Time Travel Through 6 Years. The concert took place on August 28th, 2017, at 6 p.m. local time. Stellar debuted with the single “Rocket Girl” in 2011.
