Controversies

Since 4L’s first appearance, people had been quick to criticize them. It wasn’t without a reason too, as they and their agency were criticized due to the sexual marketing tactics. Basically, sexual marketing was one of the marketing tactics of the agency in order to gain attention from people as well as increasing the group’s popularity which they also emphasized the group’s image with mostly sexiness. For the 4L controversies, the group made a 19+ sexual marketing which was provocative as the members of the group were wearing revealing outfits during the performance, they had over-sexualized dance moves, as well as the lesbian theme that they introduced in the “Move” music video. Even the first teaser of “Move” showed the same thing. A lot of netizens shared their strong arguments against the group’s concept. They said that it was “too much,” then “they’re only using homosexuality for attention,” and also questioning “why do they need to use gay codes in a way of marketing though?” not to mention other malicious comments about their concept as well. However, a Jade Contents Media representative gave an official statement regarding the controversies. They said, “Our strategy is to show raw sexiness. The teasers are just the tip of the iceberg.” But this was followed by another statement from them that since 4L was a group that pursues the raw sexiness image, that’s also the reason for those revealing outfits and overly sexy scenes in the MV. Then they also placed the 19+ age restriction for the teaser and MV as well.
