Mr. Queen‘s Introduction: Storyline, Conflict, Etc.

Before we get into the storyline, let’s talk briefly about Mr. Queen. It’s a Korean drama that is adapted from a Chinese drama called Go Princess Go. The original drama was adapted from a Chinese novel with the same title. Mr. Queen aired on tvN from December 2020 to February 2021. The title is really clear. It’s a story about a guy who turns into a queen. It may sound ridiculous, but that’s what makes the story interesting. It starts with Jang Bong-hwan, portrayed by Choi Jin-hyuk, who is a well-known chef who works in Blue House. He’s a man in his 30s. He is a free-spirited man and is always confident. Jang Bong-hwan is also a player. His personality is far from the traits of a queen who is usually soft-hearted and calm. However, due to an accident, Jang Bong-hwan is chased by the police. In order to run away, he jumps into a pool. As he is drowning, an anonymous woman approaches him, and she kisses him suddenly. Jang Bong-hwan thinks that he may be dead. When he opens his eyes, he feels something is different about his body. He wakes up in an unfamiliar place. There are some women wearing hanboks gathered around to see him. Little does he know, he has turned into a queen! His soul is trapped inside the anonymous woman that kissed him in the water. That woman is a queen in the Joseon Era. Her name is Kim So-young. She is the wife of the king, Cheoljong of Joseon. The day of their marriage is when Jang Bong-hwan had his soul placed inside Kim Soyeon’s body. Of course, he tries to deny the truth and find a way to go back to reality. We can see how hilarious Kim So-young is with a man’s soul inside. People around her are also questioning why Kim So-young is behaving weirdly. She may not be a quiet princess, but she’s acting suspiciously. On the other hand, Jang Bong-hwan inside of Kim Soyoung’s body tries to escape and go back to the present time. He tries to get into the water and explore everything to go back to his body. But, he can’t find a way to go to the present time so he tries to accept the reality. Jang Bong-hwan, or we can just call him Kim So-young now, lives life as a queen recklessly. She finally finds the truth that the king, Cheol-jong, is actually not in love with her. Instead, the king is head over heels for his concubine, Jo Hwa-jin. Funny how Jang Bong-hwan inside Kim So-young’s body is also in love with her. During the first few episodes, you will burst into laughter because of the hilarious acting in “Mr. Queen.” But, things get more serious in each episode. We will learn that the king and Kim So-young’s wedding is forced by the Andong Kim’s clan. Cheoljong wasn’t coming from the royal family. He cannot read or write. He is said to be uneducated, so after he became a king, he had to marry a woman from Andong Kim’s clan, which is Kim So-young.
