Kellie Chauvin was Derek Chauvin‘s wife. Derek was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the death of George Floyd. The judge announced the jury’s verdict at just after 4pm local time on April 20. Following the news, Chauvin was seen being led from the court in handcuffs. He is now on suicide watch in a maximum security jail and faces a sentence of up to 75 years in prison. Kellie divorced Derek shortly after he was charged over Floyd’s death. They do not have any children together. Kellie, 46, was born in Laos in 1974. Her family fled to Thailand in 1977 following the war. She’s a former radiologist and beauty queen, who won the title of Mrs Minnesota in 2018. According to Twin Cities, Kellie entered the pageant at the urging of a pal. Kellie explained that she wanted to represent the Hmong community, as she had been bullied as a child for her heritage, appearance, and refugee status. Her estranged husband, white police officer Derek Chauvin, was caught on camera, kneeling on George Floyd’s neck for nine minutes, stopping him from breathing until he died. Floyd could be heard pleading “I can’t breathe” while Chauvin ignored bystanders’ pleas to get off his neck. Chauvin was fired from the Minneapolis police department and his wife left him.
