Seventeen
Seventeen is one group that deserves the nickname ‘self-producing idols’ because Woozi, along with singer/songwriter/producer Bumzu, is known to be responsible for writing and producing most of the group’s music, from “Very Nice” to “Clap”. Woozi has even produced the work of other artists, such as Ailee and I.O.I. But he hardly ever works alone, and the rest of the members of Seventeen are heavily involved in the creative process, from production to choreography, with Hoshi in particular, helping to compose some of their amazing dance moves.
(G)I-DLE
(G)I-DLE may be relatively new to the K-pop scene, but they mostly produce their own music, thanks to Soyeon‘s talent as a songwriter and producer. Soyeon is behind many of the group’s hit songs, but she still credits the other members for inspiring her to create songs that match their unique talents and characters. The rest of the group also started to highlight their production skills: their second EP was titled I Made because all the members helped make the music. The unique single from (G)I-DLE, “HANN”, is also one of the tracks written and co-produced by Soyeon.
BTS
There’s a reason why BTS‘s music has won the hearts of people around the world, and that’s because you can feel the personal experiences, struggles, and emotions of the members in each song. The group has written their own music from the start, with increasing responsibility for the production of their long music catalog, along with in-house producers Big Hit Entertainment, Pdogg, Slow Rabbit, and Supreme Boi. RM, Suga, and J-Hope bagged a lot of credit for the group’s songs, such as the hype, “Ddaeng”.
EXID
It’s only natural that we can’t be separated from EXID since their debut in 2012. This group has its own flagship producer, LE, who has helped make most of EXID’s songs. LE has worked with renowned producer Shinsadong Tiger on hits from “Up & Down” to “Me & You”.
Block B
Zico is best known for his talent as a producer, and he has not only worked on most of Block B‘s tracks himself, but he has also lent his production skills to composing songs for television shows like Show Me The Money and Produce X 101. But Zico is not alone, because the other members, especially Park Kyung, have also participated in the creative process for a lot of Block B’s music. Although Block B tend to be known for their distinctive tough boy voice, they are versatile, you know! One of their more refined songs, “A Few Years Later”, written by Zico and Park Kyung, also became one of the favorite tracks of Block B fans.
Winner
Apart from writing most of their lyrics, Winner members have also had an active role in their music production from the very beginning. Kang Seung-yoon, Song Mino, and Lee Seung-hoon have helped produce many of the group’s hit songs, such as Yoon and Mino on “Everyday” and “Really Really” for which they wrote the lyrics themselves.
Stray Kids
There isn’t a single Stray Kids song that doesn’t contain personnel contributions, thanks in large part to their production unit, 3RACHA, which consists of Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han (under the stage names CB97, SPEARB, and J.ONE, respectively). 3RACHA has been featured on nearly every Stray Kids track, from the pre-debut song “Hellevator” to the popular “Side Effects”. Some of the songs that the trio did not take part in feature the other Stray Kids member credits on the production line, and the songs on their mixtape are entirely self-written and produced.
Pentagon
It’s no secret that Pentagon leader Hui is a genius songwriter, having written for artists like Shinhwa and Wanna One. When it comes to music, Hui and his bandmates are actively and fully involved in the creative process. Hui and E’Dawn worked on the production of the group’s hit song “Shine”, while Kino played a role in the production of “Violet” from 2017. However, to capture the full character of the group, you have to check out the super hilarious “Round 2”, which all nine members worked on together. No wonder the song is so ridiculous!
DAY6
One of 2PM’s label mates, which is DAY6, is also active in the creative process behind their music, which they feel is appropriate for a group that is filled with talented instrumentalists and vocalists! Young K, Jae, Sungjin, and Wonpil took part in the production of the group’s latest release Time of Our Life but even DAY6’s debut single from 2015 was impressively composed and written by all the members.
GOT7
Even though they weren’t originally a group making their own music, GOT7 began to take more and more control over their music since their 2016 EP Flight Log: Departure, with all seven members working on many B-side tracks on their subsequent albums. Their 2017 single, “You Are”, was co-composed and written by JB. Well, that was all the information about every K-pop group that self-produces its own songs.
