“Breath” (feat SHINee’s Jonghyun)

“Breath” (Korean Version) is a duet song between Taeyeon and the late SHINee’s Jonghyun. The song was released on February 10th, 2014. It became the title track of SM the Ballad Vol 2 – Breath. The song is promoted in three different languages. The Korean version is sung by Taeyeon and Jonghyun, the Chinese version is sung by Chen and Zhang Liyin, and the Japanese version is sung by Max Changmin and Krystal. The mini-album released on February 13th, 2014, is the last to feature member Jonghyun before his death in 2017.

“I” (feat Verbal Jint)

“I” is a song recorded by Taeyeon featuring Verbal Jint, taken from Taeyeon’s debut EP of the same title. The song was written by herself, Mafly and Verbal Jint. It was released digitally on October 7th, 2015, in conjunction with the release of the EP. The music video was filmed in Auckland, New Zealand and employed nature scenery as the backdrop. The lyrics of the song were written in an autobiographical narrative. It intended to speak from Taeyeon’s point of view on being a celebrity and, in her own words, “about being yourself in a freer way, while moving on from hard and frustrating times.” The singer has also said that she wanted the song to express a “Music is my life” feeling. The song was compared to Taylor Swift by Jeff Benjamin from Billboard. It received positive reviews from music critics. It was named the 2nd and 15th best K-pop song of 2015 by US magazine Billboard and British magazine Dazed, respectively.

“U R”

“U R” is a song recorded by Taeyeon and taken from Taeyeon’s debut EP I. The song is the second track of the EP. It was written by Jo Yun-gyeong and produced by Matthew Tishler, Robyn Newman, and Ben Charles. The song came in third on the Gaon Digital Chart and was downloaded 507,286 times.

“Stress”

“Stress” is a song recorded by Taeyeon and is also taken from Taeyeon’s debut EP I. The song is the fourth track of the EP. It was written by Mafly and produced by Hyuk Shin, Tiffany Evans, Marco Reyes (MRey), and DK. The song occupied the fourteenth position on the Gaon Digital Chart and was downloaded 207,491 times.

“Rain”

“Rain” is a song recorded by Taeyeon and the opening single of SM Station project, the project in which SM artists would release a new song every week. The song was released on February 3rd, 2016, and is described as a medium-tempo song with jazz and R&B sounds. Its lyrics uses rain as a metaphor to describe memories of past love. The song was written by Bong Eun-yeong, Mafly, and Lee Yoo-jin and produced by Matthew Tishler, Aaron Benward, Felicia Barton, and Olivia Holt. It ranked first on the Gaon Digital Chart and came in third on the Billboard Chart. It was downloaded 1,315,393 times. The song received a Digital Bonsang at the 31st Golden Disk Awards.

“Starlight” (feat Dean)

“Starlight” is a song recorded by Taeyeon and Dean. The song is the first single from Taeyeon’s second EP Why. It was released on June 25th, 2016, three days ahead of the EP’s release. The song was written by Jam Factory’s Lee Seu-ran and composed by Jamil “Digi” Chammas, Taylor Mckall, Tay Jasper, Adrian McKinnon, Leven Kali, Sara Forsberg, and MZMC. The song is a pop and R&B song that features synthesizers in its instrumentation. “Starlight” lyrics detail a romantic relationship. The music video was filmed in Los Angeles, California and visually depicted Taeyeon and Dean as a loving couple. It ranked fifth on the Gaon Digital Chart and ranked sixth on the Billboard chart. The song was downloaded 523,217 times.
