Gangnam Style!

2012 was the year that K-Pop globalization began and gained popularity in the world. The song is the lead single from his sixth album, PSY 6(Six Rules), Part 1, and it debuted number one on the Korean Gaon Chart. The music video (MV) that was released on July 15, 2012, was warmly welcomed by YouTube viewers around the world, and has been watched over 3.4 billion times! “Gangnam Style” beat the number of views for Justin Bieber’s “Baby” and “See You Again” by Charlie Puth, featuring Wiz Khalifa. The song, which was produced by himself, Yoo Gun-hyung, and YG Entertainment’s CEO also put out an atmosphere of restoration and a sexy vibe to the music video on YouTube, as well as the typical moves that PSY dances, called the “horse dance”. People all over the world have imitated this dance, especially in the five top cities in many countries, such as in Seoul (South Korea), Sulawesi (Indonesia), Milan (Italy), Paris (France), and Rome (Italy). “Gangnam Style” also ranked at number two on the US Billboard chart. This song gave him booming popularity! Let’s we see the legendary song in this music video below!

Gentlemen

“Gentlemen” was released a year after “Gangnam Style”, on April 12, 2013. The music video for this song has been watched more than 1.2 billion times on the YouTube channel officialpsy, and the video was able to scoop up the highest number of daily viewers on April 14, 2013, which reached 38.4 million views. The music concept carries an electro genre combined with house music. PSY’s song was produced by Yoo Gun-hyung, and immediately took the top spot on music charts such as Mnet, Soribada, Naver Music, Olleh Music, Bugs, and MelOn. As well as “Gangnam Style”, the “Gentlemen” music video also wheedled the audiences in huge numbers in the week after it was uploaded, getting close to 204 million views!

DADDY

The “DADDY” music video reached 200 million views on YouTube less than a year after its release day. This song was released in 2015, and topped the Billboard World Digital Songs chart at the end of December, 2015, and the MV brought out 2NE1’s CL. PSY made a creative video with scenes as a father and a silly child. The ridiculousness and creativity even made Michael Buble wonder why his songs received such incredible appreciation. PSY’s music video and songs are indeed out of the box!

New Face

On May 10, 2017, PSY released the album 8th 4×2=8, and one of the songs on it is “New Face”. The song isn’t less popular than “Gangnam Style”. PSY is definitely famous for his easy listening songs and unique dances that can be followed many people. The song’s choreography isn’t as simple as that used for “Gangnam Style”, but it’s very interesting to do and many people have memorized the dances, If people hear this song they will automatically dance with passion! “New Face” had been watched over 17 million on early after its release, and, of course, PSY is known for having comedy in each his music videos. Although the song was a success, evidently it has been banned because the language that he used is considered too vulgar. Is that true? Let’s take a look at the song’s music video!

I LUV IT

“I LUV IT” released alongside “New Face” from the same album, 8th 4×2=8, and was produced by Zico. Even though he released two songs at the same time, both of them hit the top spots on many music charts, especially for “I LUV IT,” which reached an all-kill in almost all the real-time charts. The “I LUV IT” music video used some unexpected figures, from the famous actor, Lee Byung-hyun, who starred in the music video with his dance moves, and Daimamou Kosaka who has the song “Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen”. The genre for the song is pop-dance, with touches of EDM and electro music. This can prove that PSY’s songs are still very relevant in the ears of K-pop fans, even though “Gangnam Style” has long since passed.

Right Now

“Right Now” was released after PSY finished his two years of military service in 2010. The song that he produced and wrote with Yang Hyun-suk reached number three on the Gaon Chart for Korean Downloads and fourth place on the Gaon Chart for Korean Digital. However, this song was forbidden to be played to the public by the Korean Department of Gender Equality and Korean Family, because the lyrics are considered inappropriate (too vulgar) and can trigger juvenile delinquency. PSY said that he really disagreed that his song should only be heard by teenagers over 19 years, because he thinks that the song is closely related to the life that’s considered toxic like alcohol.

Hangover

“Hangover” is a single collaboration song with Snoop Dogg that PSY released in July, 2014. The music video reached over 300 million views on YouTube, beating out Big Bang’s song titled “Fantastic Baby”.  The music video that was released, reportedly was made in just 18 hours because Snoop Dogg only had that amount of time available while he was in South Korea. Remarkably, despite the minimal time that this absurd and unique video took to make, it had a record-breaking number of views on the day of its release. Look the MV below!

NAPAL BAJI

“NAPAL BAJI,” means bell-bottoms (type of pants in 60’s). This song was released on November 30, 2015, alongside with “DADDY”. The song is catchy and enjoyable to dance to. Even though the number of views for “NAPAL BAJI” on YouTube is inferior to the number for “DADDY,” this song was actually a success on the music charts in South Korea, even getting an all-kill (1st place on all charts)! Here’s the music video!

Love (featuring Taeyang)

“Love” is one of tracks on the 8th 4×2=8 album. The album was produced by some famous musicians, and also he did collaborations with some singers, for example, Big Bang’s Taeyang. “Love” was released on May 10, 2017, and became the third music video he released, after “I LUV IT” and “New Face”. Not only PSY and Taeyang’s vocals, but the dance for the song was really cool, where it was showed by Parris Gaobel’s dancer. The dancer wore a red t-shirt with tartan mini skirt. PSY and Taeyang didn’t appear on the MV in person, there were only animations of them. Those are some of the top songs that made PSY a hitmaker!
