After the success of their debut album The Story Begins in 2015, JYP Entertainment confirmed on April 11, 2016, that Twice would be making a comeback. Twice would be releasing their second mini album titled Page Two. This 7-song album was released on April 25, 2016. This album was named Page Two because this album is the second part of Twice’s career journey in the music industry after The Story Begins. Prior to the album’s release, JYP Entertainment released the tracklist of Page Two on April 12, 2016, at 12 p.m. KST. “Cheer Up” is the title track of Page Two with music composed by Black Eyed Pilseung. The other 6 songs are “Precious Love,” “Touchdown,” “TukTok,” “Woohoo,” “Headphone Sseo,” and “I’m Gonna Be a Star.” “Precious Love” is the second track on Page Two. This song has a sad meaning. “Precious Love” tells about regret after having left a loved one.

Background of “Precious Love”

“Precious Love” (“Sojunghan Sarang“) is a remake of a song popularized by Park Ji-yoon in 1995. Park Ji-yoon is a South Korean actress, model, and singer who debuted in 1994. She gained popularity with the song “Precious Love” written by J. Y. Park. Park Ji-yoon was a JYP entertainment artist from 2000 to 2003. “Precious Love” was rearranged with the addition of house and hip hop elements. This song was written and composed by J. Y. Park and arranged by Hong Ji-sang. This 3-minute, 51-second song tells the story of regret, sadness, and heartbreak after leaving a lover.

Chaeyoung Wrote the Rap for “Precious Love”

The original version of “Precious Love” that was popularized by Park Ji-yoon does not have elements of hip hop and rap. Twice did a remake by adding a rap part in the middle of the song. This rap was written by Chaeyoung, the second youngest member of Twice who has excellent skills in writing lyrics. Not only writing the lyrics but Chaeyoung also participated in designing the cover for Page Two‘s special album. With the addition of rap, the new version of “Precious Love” has elements of hip hop and pop dance. The song also sounds fresher, although not much of the music changed. The part of the song that most distinguishes Park Ji-yoon’s version and Twice’s version is the rap part that Chaeyoung wrote. Not only the rap part but the new version of “Precious Love” also has a new intro that makes the song even more interesting. Twice added short lyrics for the intro part sung by Chaeyoung. The lyrics for the intro are “I’m so sorry. Please come back.”

Achievement of “Precious Love”

Twice did not get a special award for “Precious Love” because this song is not Page Two‘s title track. However, “Precious Love” and the 6 other songs managed to make Page Two a success. Page Two ranked second on the Gaon Album Chart and number 6 on Billboard World Albums. Not only a commercial success but Page Two also won several prestigious awards in Korea with the song “Cheer Up.” The title track of Page Two won the Song of the Year category at the 8th Melon Music Awards and the 18th Mnet Music Awards in 2016.
