Background of “Rainbow”

Before this EP album was released, Twice released the eighth extended play (EP) album titled Fancy You. After the Fancy You EP album was released, Twice held their Twicelights world tour. Both the Fancy You album and the Twicelights tour were very successful. Following this success, JYP Entertainment stated on September 9th that the group would release their next EP album on September 23rd. On the same day, the agency started to release the individual teasers, starting with Nayeon’s, the oldest member. The following day, the agency kept releasing the rest of the members’ individual teaser photos and videos from September 10th until September 17th. There was something funny that happened on September 11th, when the agency released Momo’s individual teaser. On that day, Momo changed her hairstyle which made her look so different. Because of this hairstyle change, Momo went viral on Twitter in the USA. She became much more viral because her name was ranked higher than the hashtag #AppleEvent on the US Twitter real-time trending list. The #AppleEvent was a hashtag to welcome the new release of three products from Apple. Momo’s name in the trending list beating the #AppleEvent led Jack Phan to go to Twitter. From his Twitter, Jack Phan tweeted on that day, “This is a first. #AppleEvent is happening now yet #MOMO is trending worldwide. What is MOMO?!?” The tweet was flooded by a lot of comments from many Once’s (Twice’s fans) and K-pop observers. Because of this tweet, Phan was interviewed so many times; answering questions about how familiar he was with the K-pop world and his opinion about the Twice fan base. This tweet also made Once’s call Phan an #ONCEUncle. Because of this fans’ behavior, Phan admitted that he was very amazed by Once. He said that Once made his life feel more incredible and made him #FeelSpecial (simply referencing the EP album) while doing his daily activities as the CEO of AirDeck. AirDeck is a software company, based in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. Between September 10th and September 17th, Twice also released their tracklist posters. The tracklist posters were revealed twice on September 10th and September 12th. The first tracklist poster showed the titles of all the tracks on this EP album, but the credits for each track hadn’t been revealed yet. Only the credits for the lead single and for the Korean version of “Breakthrough” were revealed. “Breakthrough” was initially a Japanese song, and through this EP album, a Korean version of “Breakthrough” was released officially. In their second tracklist poster, all the credits for each of the tracks were revealed completely. You can see their second tracklist poster for the Feel Special EP album below. Through this second tracklist poster, we can see that all the members participated in writing the sidetracks, except the Korean version of “Breakthrough”. After the release of their individual teasers, Twice released their group and unit teaser photos, other batches of their individual teaser photos, and a music video teaser, from September 18th to September 20th. The following day (September 21st), they released a highlight medley video of the EP album. From this highlight medley video, we can see the “Rainbow” preview. The next day (September 22nd), the group unveiled their luxurious online cover photo. Finally, on September 23rd, they released the EP album, alongside a final teaser, the lead single music video, and a jacket shooting video. On the same day, Twice’s official YouTube and Spotify released the full version of all the tracks on this EP album.

Story of “Rainbow”

Lyrically, this song is about how to focus on ourselves and trust ourselves without worrying about social restrictions. Nayeon once said in a video titled “Nayeon 129 Seconds” that she liked purple. That’s why in the lyrics of “Rainbow”, Nayeon often wrote lyrics related to purple such as: “It’s not too late, you can get to the purple line.”
