Not long after becoming a trainee, he participated in the survival program YG Treasure Box. Since YG Treasure Box was first broadcasted in November 2018 and was filmed before that time, it means that he was able to participate shortly after he became a trainee.

In YG Treasure Box, Asahi was actually never included in the Treasure team. In fact, he was eliminated from the 1:1 mission when he competed against Kang Seok-hwa. However, YG Entertainment decided to give Asahi a second chance even though he did not enter the final round after considering his songwriting potential. Asahi then became the second member to not enter the final round but still be chosen for the debut team after Yoshi. Before being formed into a group of 12 people, YG Entertainment initially divided Treasure into two groups, Treasure and Magnum. Originally, Asahi was a part of Magnum. However, due to several scandals, the group’s debut date was postponed. And, after some consideration, YG Entertainment decided to unite the two groups into one group called Treasure. Asahi then joined Treasure along with 11 other members such as Junkyu, Mashiho, Hyunsuk, Jihoon, Yoshi, Yoonbin, Jaehyuk, Yedam, Doyoung, Haruto, Jeong-woo, and Junghwan. He said, “I wrote this song at the beginning of this year. It started out after I thought up the top line while just working on music at the dorm. I came up with the beat first, then let Haruto listen to it. Haruto then made a rap to it and we recorded it that way first. When we recorded the actual track, I was able to give a lot of input. I think that I’ve improved a lot, looking back on my past compositions. I’m doing a better job of selecting the right instruments that match the song, and such.” Haruto, who got involved in the process, also added, “I wrote the lyrics to ‘Orange’ after Asahi hyung gave me the beat, and I liked the beat so much that the lyrics just came to me naturally. I’m thankful that I was able to participate in the title track and in ‘Orange’ this time again.” “Orange” is the first ballad song released by Treasure since the previous five songs tended to be fast-paced.
