Park Yoo-chun’s Drug Case

Park Yoo-chun has been sentenced to 10 months in prison and suspended for two years. If he commits any crimes in the next two years, he will be sent to prison. He has also been fined with 1.4 million won. Park Yoo-chun was convicted of purchasing Philopon, a form of methamphetamine, on three occasions, and injecting the drug seven times. He was accused of doing so with his former girlfriend, Hwang Hana. Following the court’s ruling on July 2nd, Park Yoo-chun was released from the detention center he had been detained in for 68 days since April 26th. On his way out, he said to reporters, “I would like to apologize once again for causing concern to many people. I will give back to society and virtuously work hard. I promise to do so. I apologize.” When a reporter asked him to say something to his fans, he started tearing up and said, “I’m sorry. I feel very apologetic to my fans. I’m really sorry.” He did not answer the question on plans to appeal against his sentence and simply said, “I apologize. I will live diligently and virtuously.”

Park Yoo-chun Leaves JYJ

Following the positive test results, Park’s management agency, C-JeS Entertainment, announced that it had terminated its contract with Park Yoo-chun. This is the official statement from C-JeS Entertainment: “Hello, this is C-JeS Entertainment. While trusting Park Yoo-chun’s statement that he is not guilty [of taking drugs] and observing the investigation process, we found out through news articles yesterday that [Park Yoo-chun] tested positive for a drug test that was initiated by the National Forensic Service. We waited for the investigation results to come out while believing the testimony of Park Yoo-chun, who was an artist under our agency, but we feel terrible that we encountered such a result. We came to the conclusion that we won’t be able to recover our relationship of [mutual] trust with Park Yoo-chun and decided to terminate the exclusive contract. Just as Park Yoo-chun stated during the press conference, he will be retiring from the industry. Further scheduled promotional activities will be canceled, and he will follow according to the Department of Justice’s decision. The agency deeply acknowledges the gravity and responsibility of the matter. We will do our best to go through reform and take strict measures to prevent such an incident from arising again. We bow our heads in apology for causing worry with such an unfortunate event.” The star held a press conference during which he stated that he would retire from the entertainment industry, which the company’s statement reiterated. A member of the trio JYJ, the group is reportedly expected to disband, according to the news.

JYJ’s Transformation Into JJ

JYJ (formerly known as Junsu/Yuchun/Jejung in Japan) is a South Korean pop group formed in 2010 by Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu, the three former members of TVXQ. Their group name is taken from the initial letters of each member’s name. The group is managed by C-JeS Entertainment in Korea. After Park Yoo-chun’s scandal, JYJ transformed into JJ consisting of Jaejoong and Junsu. But there is news that JYJ is going to disband. JYJ has been doing philanthropic works, such as commemorating their inaugural group tour, The Beginning Showcase World Tour 2010, by donating the profits (about 44,000,000 KRW) from the Seoul showcase to World Vision International. Immediately after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, JYJ donated ₩600,000,000 to World Vision Japan fulfilling the organization’s entire fundraising goal. JYJ also held two rounds of charity concerts at the Tokyo Yoyogi National Competition Arena in Tokyo on June 7th, 2011, for a total of 20,000 fans. The proceeds were used to purchase ‘radiation monitors’ for schools in Fukushima. In addition, JYJ held charity concerts for 80,000 fans on October 15th and 16th, 2011, at the Hitachi Kaihin Park in Ibaraki, a region badly damaged by the natural disasters. Profits from ticket sales were donated to the Ibaraki relief fund. After the 2011 Thailand floods, JYJ donated ₩200,000,000 in November 2011 to World Vision, matching and doubling the organization’s fundraising goal for flood relief in Thailand, for the purpose of dispensing emergency food aid, water treatment, mosquito nets, and other daily necessities.

The Group’s Future Plans

There is no specific news of the group’s future plans. Kim Junsu enlisted in the military on February 9th, 2017. In February 2013, the group performed a medley of hit songs from the ’90s as well as their own songs at the 18th South Korean Presidential Inauguration Ceremony for the country’s first female president Park Geun-hye, in front of an audience of 70,000 people. The group also had a performance in Tokyo Dome, Japan after 4 years of hiatus due to the lawsuit.
