Since its formation in 2011, The Gaon Chart Awards have delivered outstanding and entertaining performances from artists and musicians at the peak of their popularity. The 6th Gaon Chart Awards took place at Jamsil Arena, Seoul on February 22nd, 2017. The event was hosted by Super Junior’s Lee Teuk and Mamamoo’s Solar. Red Carpet

All celebrities and guest performers appear on the Red Carpet event before the start of the awards. BTS were the first guest performers to greet fans and the audience at the red carpet. BTS members looked dapper and handsome in semi-casual black suits. Most of the guest performers chose black outfits. Blackpink gained attention with their Red Carpet outfit. They chose Victorian-style floral dresses that made them stand out from the other celebrity guests. Korean rapper and music producer, Dean, became the main spotlight due to his unique electric yellow coat. Beautiful actress and soon-to-be Running Man member, at the time, Jeon So-min looked dazzling in a beautiful white dress. MC couple of the event, Super Junior’s Lee Teuk and Mamamoo’s Solar looked handsome and beautiful in matching white suit and dress.

Performances

Performances at the 6th Gaon Chart Awards were dominated by female and male idol groups. Other than idol groups, solo artists, vocal groups, and rappers also participated in the annual event. The complete list of performers comprises GOT7, Dean, Mamamoo, BTS, Blackpink, Bewhy, Sistar, Urban Zakapa, EXO, NCT127, Bol4, GFriend, Lee Teuk, Twice, and Han Dong-geun. The concept of performance at The 6th Gaon Chart Awards was a jukebox player. At the opening, Lee Teuk introduced every performer as if they are a music disc inside a jukebox player. Before each performance, the jukebox player selected the music disc that represents the artist performing. BTS performed full versions of “Save Me” and “Blood Sweat and Tears.” Among other performers, BTS were the only artists to perform two full songs. It was understandable since they were the main performer of the 6th Gaon Chart Awards. BTS members looked handsome and cool with their casual suit outfits and energetic choreography. Audiences at the award could be heard singing along to BTS’ songs.

Twice was one of the highly anticipated performers at the Gaon Chart Awards. They performed “Pit A Pat” with cute choreography, bright makeup, and cheerful faces. After performing “Pit A Pat,” Twice performed their signature song, “TT.”

GFriend amazed the audience with their stage performance. They performed their hit singles “Navillera” and “Rough” with live vocals. The girls looked mature with black outfits and slightly intense makeup.

GFriend was the winner of Artist of the Year Award for their January song, “Rough.” “Rough” was released as the lead single of GFriend’s 3rd EP Snowflake. “Rough” defeated Zico, MC The Max, Suzi, and Baekhyun for the award. On their acceptance speech, GFriend thanked their beloved friends, parents, and CEO.

Mamamoo received the Artist of the Year Award for their February song, “You’re the best.” Mamamoo thanked their fans, parents, and staff of Mamamoo. Mamamoo defeated SNSD’s Taeyeon for the award.

Girl group Sistar won the Artist of the Year Award for the June song. They won the award with their single “I Like That.” For 30 days, “I Like That” was streamed more than 60 million times and the MV was viewed more than 10 million times within only 10 days after release. Sistar thanked their label company’s board of directors, the Sistar staff, fans. Special praise was given to Rado, the songwriter of “I Like That.”

Blackpink of YG Entertainment was one of the biggest winners in the awarding event. Blackpink collected Rookie of the Year Award and Song of the Year Award for “Whistle” and “Playing with Fire.” Rookie Blackpink thanked their fans and YG Entertainment for making their success happen. The girls also expressed their gratitude to YG Entertainment CEO, song-writers, and production staff.

Sehun of EXO won individual Artist of Fan Choice while EXO won the award for Artist of Fan Choice. There was a funny moment when Sehun was announced as the winner. The camera recorded Seho while Sehun walked toward the main stage. Seho signaled the cameraman that he should record Sehun as the winner instead of him. Sehun thanked fans for choosing him as the receiver of the award. It was surely EXO’s night.

BTS won the Best Album Award of the 4th quarter at the 6th Gaon Charts Awards. BTS triumphed over EXO, BIGBANG, and Seventeen. BTS’ second full album, Wings, sold more than 700.000 copies worldwide in the first 6 weeks after release. Due to the album’s success, BTS rightfully claimed the Best Album of the Year Award of the 4th quarter. As the leader of BTS, RM thanked BTS Army for their continuous support. He said that it was the award they have been waiting for. Jimin continued BTS’ acceptance speech. He sincerely thanked fans for supporting them until receiving the award. There are so many people that had been working hard for BTS, such as makeup, manager, hairstylist, Big Hit Entertainment staff, ARMY. V completed the acceptance speech with a special thanks to the parents, Big Hit Entertainment board of directors, and BTS Army.
